It is a pleasure to welcome you most sincerely to the webpage of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun Nigeria, Nigeria. The Department evolved in 1981 and became one of the five Departments that formed the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (EDM) on April 6, 1982.The Department offered the first Urban and Regional Planning (URP) programme at the undergraduate level in the country. It is one of the very few Departments of (URP), which has full Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) and Town Planners Registration Council’s (TOPREC) accreditation for their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University level in Nigeria.

It has contributed immensely to Urban and Regional Planning education in Nigeria. The Department has also been offering Ph.D. degree programme in the different areas of URP for some two decades. These include transportation, housing, regional planning, solid waste management, community development, industrial location, infrastructure facilities, rural development and urban design, among others. Research has been carried out and is still on-going in these areas.The graduates of this Department have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers and they are holding important professional and managerial positions in public and private organizations nationally and internationally. The Council of Obafemi Awolowo University also approved the take-off of four Post-graduate Diploma programmes in the following areas:

  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Planning Processes (PGDPP)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Transportation Planning (PGDTP)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Housing and Urban Renewal Processes (PGDHURP)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Landscape Planning (PGDLP).

These programmes are to provide intensive training and refresher courses for professionals in planning establishments. The M.Phil. programmes which has also been approved is to promote capacity building in relation to the development of Planning Education. It is geared towards the training of the category of candidates who intend to pursue the doctoral programme. We desire to have mutual collaborations with units and corporate organizations in Nigeria and abroad.
