Abstract

This study examined changes in shoreline positions along Ondo State coastline of Ondo State between 1969 and 2013 using Geospatial Technology. The sections of shoreline affected by erosion and accretion as well as Shoreline migration rate during the study period were determined. Topographic map of 1969 and Multi-temporal satellite images of 1986 and 1999 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) as well as 2005 and 2013 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) were utilized for this study. Satellite imagines were processed using both ILWIS and Arc GIS software while the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) was used to analyse and predict rate of shoreline displacement. The results showed erosion to be dominant over accretion during the study period. During the period between 1969 and 2013, an average of 130,310.15m2
per year of land was lost to erosion while an average of 55,889m2/per year of land was accreted. Also, the results showed that Ondo State Shoreline was very dynamic with an average rates of erosion and accretion estimated at – 4.23m/yr and +3.42m/yr, respectively. The study showed that Ondo State shoreline had undergone significant changes in terms of erosion and accretion of the coast line brought about by shifting in the shoreline positions.
