Professor Afon Abel Omoniyi is a Professor of Urban and Regional Planning in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He was born on November 17, 1956, in Oyo State, Nigeria. He joined the university system in November 1992 as a Graduate Assistant and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in October 2012. He holds a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from Obafemi Awolowo University, as well as additional qualifications including a Diploma in Computer Studies, a Diploma in Estate Management, and a Master of Divinity in Theology.

Professor Afon has extensive teaching experience in urban and regional planning and has taught courses such as Environmental Science, Quantitative Techniques, Planning Studio, Project Planning and Evaluation, Environmental Impact Assessment, Solid Waste Management, and Research Techniques at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has supervised a large number of postgraduate students at the Master’s and Doctoral levels, many of whom have completed research in environmental management, solid waste management, urban development, and spatial analysis.

His research interests focus primarily on environmental planning, particularly environmental perception and solid waste management. His scholarly work has examined residents’ perception of environmental quality, waste generation patterns, environmental hazards, and the socio- economic factors influencing environmental management. He has contributed significantly to knowledge through numerous journal articles, books, conference proceedings, and technical reports, with particular emphasis on sustainable environmental management in Nigerian cities. Professor Afon is a member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and the Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria. He has participated in major planning projects such as environmental impact assessments, master plan preparation, and urban development studies. He has also served the university in several administrative capacities, including Acting Head of Department, Vice Dean, and member of Senate, while continuing to contribute to teaching, research, and professional practice.
