HOD’s Welcome Address

It is my pleasure to welcome you most sincerely to the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Established in 1981, the Department is the first to offer Urban and Regional Planning (URP) programme at the undergraduate level in Nigeria and remains a foremost planning school in Nigeria where urban and regional planners who are tasked to design the spatial, social and economic future of human settlements are trained.

In over 40 years, the Department has trained thousands of urban and regional planners across the West African sub-region, and is counted among the best planning schools on the continent of Africa. It is fully accredited by Town Planners Registration Council of Nigeria (TOPREC) and in partnership with the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP).

Currently, the Department offers one undergraduate and seven postgraduate programmes as follows:

Undergraduate Programmes:

  • BSc. Urban and Regional Planning

Postgraduate Programmes:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning (Academic)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Planning Processes (Professional)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Transportation Planning (Professional)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Housing and Urban Renewal Processes (Professional)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Landscape Planning (Professional)
  • MSc. Urban and Regional Planning (Academic)
  • MPhil Urban and Regional Planning
  • PhD Urban and Regional Planning

Aside our academic programmes, we are involved in many cutting-edge research activities spanning planning-related fields such as urban sustainable development and city management; environmental planning and management; regional planning and sustainable community development; climate change and natural resources management; transportation and infrastructure planning among others. Outcomes of many of these research works have serve as the bases for effective and efficient spatial and socio-economic planning practice in Nigeria. The Department is also involved in many community services, aimed at bringing participatory and sustained development to all communities and institutions we are engaged with.
